Too Late!

There are times when we get so badly behind schedule that we’re just too late. And the train slides down the track without us or the plane becomes a vanishing dot in the sky. The annoying truth is that had we not wasted time we would not have been late. But so what? It’s not the end of the world! But then again, what if it is – literally?

We speak of the dead as the “late” so-and-so. But in some cases, it may mean exactly that, because where God is concerned, after death is too late. In the Bible there’s a man who told the preacher, “Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you” (Acts 24:25 NKJV). And there’s another man who told that same preacher, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian” (Acts 26:28). But as it turned out, both these men were too late, and passed into a dreadful eternity. But as their preacher, Paul, faced death he said he actually looked forward to dying because “to be with Christ … is far better” (Phil. 1:23).

So where do you fit in all this? Where is your hope? Anything less than trusting Christ is an unsure foundation of sand (Mt. 7:24-27). We either believe God or we perish calling Him a liar. The Bible says that “God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (Jn. 3:16). The road to hell is paved with good intentions! If you put off God, intending to listen to Him later, you may be too late.

Before it is too late, how infinitely better to respond this way: “God, be merciful to me a sinner!” (Lk. 18:13). The One who died for our sins can’t resist a repentant sinner. He’ll pardon you immediately and give you peace, just as He said: “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace” (Lk. 7:50).

Don’t be too late: “Now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2). We can help you be in time!
