-We Worship A Sovereign God
In spite of the rise of evil, it’s comforting to know that we worship a sovereign God. Nothing will thwart His designs. Kingdoms rise and fall but He will fulfill His purpose according to His own counsel. He always was and always will be sovereign. If He ceased to be so He’d cease to be God. That can’t be: He is “over all, the eternally blessed God” (Rom. 9:5 NKJV).
It is good to see some of His sovereign ways with men in Scripture. In Acts 8 we find Him going into the “political world” and taking up the eunuch who was treasurer of Ethiopia under Queen Candace. In Acts 9 we see Him going into the “academic world” and taking up that great Hebrew scholar, Saul of Tarsus. In Acts 10, He goes into the “military world” laying His hand on a Roman centurion named Cornelius.
In the Gospels we find God passing by the high and mighty and laying His hand on such as a little boy with loaves and fishes. In the Old Testament we see how He used a prisoner of war, the little maid in Naaman’s house (2 Ki. 5). And He even used a sinful woman, Rahab the harlot (Josh. 6).
When human agencies fail, is God thwarted in achieving His purpose? No! He went into the “animal kingdom” and spoke through Balaam’s donkey (Num. 22). In the “vegetable kingdom” He caused Aaron’s rod to bud (Num. 17). He even used the “mineral kingdom” turning dust into lice (Ex. 8:17).
Truly God’s ways are “past finding out.” Paul went on to ask, “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?” (Rom. 11:33-34). The answer is, “No one.” God is His own Counselor.
All we have to do is to bow to His Word and will. This is the way of true blessing. We do well to take heed to Samuel’s injunction to Saul: “To obey is better than sacrifice and to hearken than the fat of rams” (1 Sam. 15:22). This is the way of worshipful service, until we see His face.
