-Focusing For Service
Why is it that we have so little time to devote to the study and meditation of the Scriptures? Do you ever wish for a time when life was simpler, when “labor-saving” devices didn’t demand so much labor, time and attention? Perhaps the biggest hindrance to time alone with God is the multitude of distractions around us.
There’s a story told of a young man who had a tower built near the sea with no windows except near the top. When asked the reason, he declared that he planned to study in this tower, and he wanted no distractions – only light! By shutting himself into the tower he was able to concentrate on the subject of his study.
This is a noble thought; and we must do something similar if we are to be undistracted in our “quiet time.” If the normal intrusions of life are not deliberately blocked out, we will be unsuccessful in building up the relationship with our Father, who desires to reveal Himself personally through the Holy Spirit. The Psalmist cried out to the Lord for this help.
“But I’m just too busy,” you say. If you were to prioritize every hour of your life with a view towards eternity, would anything be rearranged? If you knew you would die in one week, how would you spend your time? Are there “worthless things” from which you would turn away your eyes? May God give us discernment in this day of distractions, that our lives not be spent on temporary pursuits, but on that which produces eternal results. Then we can expect the Lord to revive us in His way, according to His Word, which endures forever. If we do not focus on Him in His Word, we will be hopelessly buried in the “worthless things” of this life.
