What an interesting book! It’s a unique look at Genesis – the first book of the Bible, the one that provides us with an overview of God’s immense purpose for humanity. As the author, Warren Henderson writes in his opening chapter, “the revelation in Genesis concerning the ‘blueprint’ for human affairs is immense. However, most of this information is in ‘seed form.’” He then points out that the word “seed” appears 56 times in Genesis, “over twice as many times as any other book in the Bible.” And “the main teachings of the Bible derive their heritage and features from Genesis seeds.” And there are over “200 direct references” to Genesis in the New Testament. That’s why the book is titled, “Seeds Of Destiny.”
I say it’s unique because, as the rest of the title indicates, it is “A Devotional Study Of Genesis.” There are several objective Bible studies on Genesis currently available in Christian bookstores. And many subjective devotionals always seem to focus the reader’s attention on several popular highlights from Genesis. But this 382-page hardback contains over 100 devotional studies that systematically cover all 50 chapters of Genesis – the “seed plot” of the whole Bible.
While a few chapters focus the reader’s attention on a single verse, most look at a cluster of verses on specific subjects. No part of Genesis is overlooked. The author points out that the true purpose of this devotional study is “learning Christ and proper doctrine to promote healthy life.” In addition, he indicates that the reader will also “uncover hidden treasures of Christ veiled away in abstract symbols, reclusive personal portraits and mysterious names.”
Most of the chapters are three pages long, easily allowing the reader time to digest the meat of the study as well as meditate on its devotional aspect. Respected writers from the past – such as J. N. Darby, C. H. Mackintosh, H. A. Ironside, W. Kelly, Hamilton Smith, F. W. Grant, Matthew Henry – are quoted throughout the book. Each chapter concludes with a verse from a song or poem, or a brief prose quotation that relates to the chapter’s theme.
In addition to the 100 devotional studies of Genesis, Henderson also includes two very helpful appendices. In “Appendix A: Viewpoints On Creation (Gen.1),” he briefly summarizes and explains old earth creationism, young earth creationism, and theistic evolution. In “Appendix B: Four Hundred Year Prophecy (Gen. 15)” he offers his opinion concerning the fulfillment of the prophecy concerning Abram’s descendants who would be sojourners in a land that would make them servants (Gen. 15:13-14).
I heartily recommend Warren Henderson’s “Seeds Of Destiny: A Devotional Study Of Genesis” both to those interested in a study of Genesis, and to those wanting a devotional based on its many seeds. This publication is available from Gospel Folio Press.
