Are we supposed to hate or not?
Luke 14:26
and 1 John 3:15

  1. You must hate – (Luke 14:26) – “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.”
  2. You must not hate(1 John 3:15) –Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.”

In Luke 14:26, Jesus is drawing a comparison of importance by exaggerating a relationship.  He is saying that it is far more important to love Him than anyone else, including your own parents.  Of course, He is not telling people to hate their parents.  He is saying that by comparison to Him, you must love Him more than all else.
1 John 3:15, John is writing to the church about abiding in the love of Christ.  In fact, in 1 John, the word “abide” occurs 16 times in the NASB and the apostle continually refers to abiding in Christ (1 John 2:4,24,28; 3:6,24, etc.)
Therefore, we see that a true Christian will love the Lord Jesus supremely and in so doing he will not abide in hatred towards his brother.

  1. Excellent distinction. Some people take the Bible too literally. Jesus was obviously making a point about how much we should be him first.

  2. BTW, I would add one more thing.
We should “hate the sin, not the sinner”, for we were all once sinners and God’s Grace reached down and saved us too!

  3. A “True Christian”, one who has become Truly “Born Again” has died [spiritualy] and those things of his/her past are to be remembered no more. We are “new creatures in Christ” Paul the Apostle said. If Yahushua, Christ Jesus, truly lives inside of you, by His Spirit, then it isn’t possible to hete your neighbor/Brother/Sister. For God is LOVE and aren’t we now “The Temple of God”, not made with hands by the works of man, but by The Redeeming Grace of God the Father through the Blood of Yahushua, Christ Jesus !!
Yes, we are still in the world [ in a fleshly body], but we are not to be “conformed to the ways of the world”. We are to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, [ that is DAILY asking for repentance of where we fall short of God’s ways], letting Him Masterfully and with great precision, “surgically” remove the sin that remains in us.
As we become the “new creature” through the True “Born Again” experience, we become more and more like Him and less like the world !
