Most people I speak to reckon they are generally good. In fact, they’ll say that humans are all basically good deep down. When thinking of God and heaven, their idea is that as long as we are “generally good” and don’t do anything “really awful,” God will accept us in the end. That sounds all very well and good, until you actually think about it.
If people are generally good, why are there security cameras all over the place? Why do shopping malls and superstores employ security guards? Why are expensive goods in shops security tagged? Why does it take so long to get past the security screening section of the airport? Why do people have security alarms fitted on their houses and cars? Why does insurance cost so much? Because of all the fraudulent claims!
According to the theory of evolution, we are improving all the time. Granted our scientific and medical knowledge is getting better by the day. Granted we are all living longer, even though we eat all the wrong stuff and don’t exercise as much as we should. But if we are all becoming better people, why are the prisons full and overflowing?
The real, hard fact is that we are not “generally good” at all! We may not all kill or rape, but we all lie, steal and cheat in some form or another. The Bible calls these things sin, and we all sin (Rom. 3:23). Are we generally good people? Ask any civil or criminal court lawyer or judge how good we are!
The truth is that only God is good – so good that He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin. If we repent of our sin – admit we’re wrong and say we’re sorry – God has promised to forgive us through Jesus. Why not come to Him right now? We can show you the way!
