Rev Mar’s Sermon (Aug 12, 2007)

More on Rom. 8:28 (Psalm 13)

Continuation of past sermons on Rom. 8:28. We have learned that when a person continuous to love Jesus (1 Cor. 16:22; Jn. 14:21, 23; Ephe. 6:24) and heeds the calling of God's purpose (Matt. 9:13; 9:9; Jn. 12:26), all events that are happening in his life will work together for his good. This is an encouraging verse during trials and tests when we recall and remind ourselves that the Lord is upholding all things by the word of His power (Heb. 1:3) and all things are in His control. (Jn. 10:28) But while we are in that valley of death waiting for the Lord's deliverance we remind ourselves of the Lord's promises:

a. We cling on to the promises of Rom. 8:28 that though appearances may be contrary to our faith, but if we love the Lord Jesus Christ with sincerity (or with an incorruptible love) His grace is upon us (Ephe. 6:24) and we know that all things are working together for our own good.

b. We also recite Ps 23 to Jesus, our good Shepherd, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

c. We wonder when the Lord Jesus will finally deliver us out of trouble and we bring to mind, Eccl. 3:11-He hath made every thing beautiful in his time. But when one day seems like a thousand years, sometimes we ask ourselves, “has the Lord forgotten me?” But then, immediately, we remember His words, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Heb. 13:5)

d. And so we persuade ourselves, “Nay in all these things we are more than conquerors through Jesus who loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom. 8:37-39)

Truly, these verses gave us strength and encouragement when we were ready to throw in the towel.

This is the kind of situation David was in, in Psalm 13.

A. Ang tanong ni David sa Awit 13:1 (Until when will You forget me, O Jehovah? Forever?) ay nakapagtataka sapagkat:

  1. patungkol kay David:

a. ay sinasabi ng Panginoon patungkol kay David-“a man after mine heart who shall fulfill all my will (1 Sam. 13:14; Acts 13:22)

b. ay sinabing the Savior, Jesus, will be raised unto Israel in the house of His servant David (Lk 1:69- And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.)

c. ay sinabing the Lord has establish the kingdom of David saying “let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.” (1 Chron. 17:24) and “There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel.” (1Ki. 8:25; 9:5; 2Chron. 7:18)

(Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done.) (Isa 48:3 I have declared the former things from the beginning;)

b. Clarify: Jer. 31:34– “for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.” When the Lord says, “And their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more”, it does not mean that the Lord has become forgetful, but rather that He will not bring up our sins against us for judgment because He has already forgiven our sins.)

c. Clarify further: Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. (cf. Mar 13:32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.) Iyong “oida” ay experiential knowing or to be in-charged o pamamahala.

B. Going back to the question: Bakit sa Ps. 13:1a, tanong ni David, “How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? forever?”

(Jn. 21:17)

2. The first clause of verse 1 has to be understood with the 2nd clause-” how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?” Unang tanong: Hanggang kailan mo ako kakalimutan Panginoon?

“Yahweh bless thee, and keep thee:

Yahweh make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

Yahweh lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”

Si David ay siyang sinasabing “a man after the heart of God who will do His will.” (Acts 13;22) Kaya sa 1Ch 16:11 ay sinasabi ni David, “Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.”

d. Ang testimony ni David ay “The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine (Goliath).” (1Sa 17:37) Kaya ang sabi niya kay Jonathan “there is but one step between me and death.” He has lived on the edge.

(Rom. 8:31)

1. Anong response ni David? Living by faith.

a. “but I have trusted in thy mercy, thy lovingkindness;”

b. “my heart shall rejoice (sa Hebrew language ay walang future tense. Ito ay hindi future tense kundi imperfect tense, meaning, “my heart is rejoicing”) in thy salvation;”

c. “I will sing unto the LORD, because he hath dealt bountifully with me.” (even in the face of adversaries)

2. Similar responses:

a. Job- Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him: but I will maintain mine own ways before Him. (Job 13:15)

b. Meshach, Shadrach and Abednego-… “our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.” (Dan. 3:17-18)

I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation. I will sing unto the Lord because He has dealt bountifully with me.”

c. Illustration: Testimony of Sis. Irene: Sis. Irene is one of our song leaders in Payatas. She would strive to come to Payatas to serve the Lord, many times at the pain of sourcing fare. Even when she had no work, she would be in church faithfully leading congregational singing. Finally, the Lord gave her employment on a temporary basis. The work was far from ideal, she received verbal abuses but she always trusted in the Lord by doing her work diligently and faithfully. One morning, she had money just enough for her fare to her work and she would not know how to get back home later at the end of the day but she trusted in the Lord’s provision. That morning as she was about to enter her workplace, her Dad (who lives in a different place) dropped by to see her and handed her a P100 bill. That would have elated anybody without a cent to pay his/her way home. But later that morning, her boss called her to give her her differential pay because she was given a raise which she did not know about. Later on that same day, she was called again. She was given allowance to get her work uniform done because she has been made a permanent employee. Miracles of miracles.

(Col. 3:17, 23-24-And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him…And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ.) (2Pe 1:4 and Phi 4:19-By which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises . . . And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
