WHO IS THE SINGLE PERSON LORD GOD WHO DIRECTLY APPEARS TO AND COVENANTS WITH GOD’S PEOPLE IN THE ENTIRE BIBLE? WHO IS THE SINGLE PERSON BEING CALLED UPON, PRAYED TO, WORSHIPPED AND SERVED BY THE PEOPLE OF GOD IN THE ENTIRE BIBLE FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT TO THE NEW TESTAMENT UNTO THE HEAVENS AND UNTO THE NEW CREATION IN ETERNITY?

I. The Trinitarian Teaching of the Bible

A. In the Old Testament. There is plurality of Subjects or Persons in the Biblical GOD (ELOHIM) [Gen. 1:26] and/or LORD (YAHWEH) GOD (ELOHIM) [Gen. 3:22] and/or LORD (YAHWEH) [Gen. 11:6-7].

1. The Hebrew title Elohim is plural in form, usage and meaning. The singular form is El.

2. The use of plural personal pronouns in these verses, e.g., “us” or “our” is used with the title Elohim, or Yahweh Elohim or Yahweh.

3. In Genesis chapter 1, there is already the adumbration of the Three Persons (God th Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit) of the Godhead. Verse 2 speaks of the Spirit of God; v. 26 speaks of the image of the plural Elohim (our image) and v. 27 speaks of the image of a single Person (his own image) in whom man was created. In the New Testament, Jesus Christ, God the Son, is the image of the invisible God (Col. 1:15; Jn. 1:18; Matt. 11:27-28). The invisible God is God the Father who is revealed or declared to us by Jesus who is in the bossom of the Father.

B. In the New Testament

1. The use of prepositions. The Son is INFRONT (pros-TOWARD, facing) the Father. (Jn. 1:1) The Son came from BESIDE (“the only begotten of [para-from BESIDE]) the Father. (Jn. 1:14; 16:28) The Son is now set down WITH (meta-in accompaniment) the Father (Rev. 3:21). The Son is also IN FRONT of the Father when He said, “whosoever shall confess Me before (emprosthen-in front of) men, him will I also confess before (emprosthen-in front of) My Father who is in heaven.” (Matt. 10:32-33) Thus the Son is distinct from and another Person from the Person of God the Father.

2. The Lord Jesus Christ definitely taught the plurality of the Lord God when He explicitlysaid:

a. I AM NOT ALONE, for the Father is WITH ME.” (Jn. 16:32)

b. the One who sent Me is WITH ME. He has not left ME ALONE, for I always do what is pleasing to Him.” Jn. 8:29)

c. “…even as I also overcame, and am set down with My Father in His throne.” (Rev. 3:21)

d. The Holy Spirit is sent by the Father in Jesus’ name (Jn. 14:26). The Holy Spirit is also sent by the Son from (para-FROM BESIDE) the Father. (Jn. 15:26)

e. when the Spirit of truth is come…He will not speak of Himself…He will glorify Me, for He shall receive of mine and shall show it unto you.” (Jn. 16:13-14)

C. The plurality of Subjects or Persons of the Lord God is taught in the following Biblical revelations.

1. Prior to the creation of the world by the Almighty Lord God the Son Jesus Christ, there was already an Eternal or Everlasting Covenant between the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. (Heb. 13:20; 2 Tim. 1:8-10; Ephe. 1:3-11; 3:9-11; Heb. 9:11-14) There could have been no everlasting covenant if there is only one Person in eternity. For a covenant to exist there should be two Persons (God the Father and God the Son) covenanting and another Person (God the Holy Spirit) witnessing or testifying or confirming that Covenant or Agreement. God the Holy Spirit testifies of the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 14:26; 15:26; 16:13-15; 2 Cor. 13:14)

2. Even before or prior to the creation of the world by the Almighty Lord God the Son Jesus Christ, God is already Love. (1 Jn. 4:8, 16) So, the Lord God the Father was already the Lover of the Lord God the Son and the Lord God the Son is the Beloved of the Lord God the Father. The Lord God the Holy Spirit was already the Love Bond of the aforementioned Father and the Son (Jn. 17:24). If the Lord God were a single Person in eternity, there could have been no Love to speak of for while there may be a Lover there would be no Beloved nor would there be a Love Bond (2 Cor. 13:14). We can then only surmise that that love is self-directed love and self-love is a satanic love which is entirely opposed and against Godly love which is self-giving for the good of others. (Joh 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.)

3. When the LORD (YAHWEH) APPEARED to Abraham (Gen. 18:1), Abraham saw three MEN (Gen. 18:2). In Exo. 6:1-7, the Lord God in the Old Testament revealed Himself to Moses “I (singular 1st pronoun) am the LORD: and I (singular 1st pronoun) appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God (El-singular) Almighty. (vv. 2-3) In verse 7, that single Person YAHWEH says “I will be to you a God (Elohim-plural) and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God (Elohim-plural). This means that the single Person (YAHWEH) appearing to Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob and now Moses, is the single Revealer of the three Person of the Godkind.

4. There are definite and permanent and/or eternal distinctions of the INDIVIDUAL SELVES/PERSONS, POSITIONS and DESIGNATIONS of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Heb. 1:5-8; Jn. 3:34; 14:26; 15:26)

D. The Biblical assertion that “the LORD (YAHWEH) our God (ELOHIM-plural) is one…” (Deut 6:4-5) does not mean that the Lord God (Elohim) is one in number neither does it mean that the LORD (YAHWEH) God (ELOHIM) is a single person. The Bible, the written Word of God, definitely reveals and teaches that the LORD (YAHWEH) God (ELOHIM) is one (echad [Heb]=en or eis [Gr]) in the sense that the Lord our God is a SINGLEKIND or SINGLECLASS or SINGLE ORDER or SINGLE CATEGORY of BEING.

1. The same kind/class/order/characteristics, e.g., Gen. 2:24 (echad-one flesh). Complementing this is Ephe 5:31- For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one (mia) flesh. Gal 3:28-There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one (eis) in Christ Jesus. (Cf: 1 Cor. 3:8; 6:16-17; 10:17; Eph. 2:14-15; Phil 1:27; 2:2)

2. The Biblical term “one” (‘echad’ in Hebrew and ‘en’ or ‘eis’ in Greek) does not only mean or refer to individuals of the same kind/class but refer also to many (or at least more than one) persons belonging to the same class or kind of being united or agreeing with one another to interpenetrate and/or to reciprocally dwell in each other (cf. Jn. 17:20-23). For example: “…That they all may be ONE (eis); as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be ONE (eis) in us:…that THEY may be ONE (eis) as WE ARE ONE (eis). (Jn. 17:21-22) although during the self-humiliation of God the Son incarnate when He took the form and function of the good, faithful and suffering servant (Phil. 2:5-8; Isa. 53:1-12), the Father was greater than the Son. (Jn. 10:29- My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand; Jn. 14:28- If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.). However, in Jn. 10:30, the Lord Jesus Christ has predicated ONE (eis) to a plurality of these TWO SELVES as being ONE IN ESSENCE when He said, “I and the Father ARE ONE (eis).”

II. While the Bible teaches that there are Three Persons in the one Godkind, there is only one of the Three Persons directly revealing Himself and covenanting with the people of God, whether in the Old Testament or in the New Testament and even unto the PRESENT HEAVENS unto the NEW HEAVENS and NEW EARTH. This single Person of the one Godkind is the singularly and directly self-revealing and directly covenanting God and the one directly worshipped, called upon, and served by the people of God. (Matt. 4:10- Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.)

A. Old Testament

1. Adam and Eve. Though Elohim (the three Persons) agreed among themselves that man be created (Let us make man in our image), the Lord God who created Adam and Eve and directly dealing with them is a single Person in whose image man was created. (Gen. 1:27-So God (Elohim) created man in his own image, in the image of God created He him; 2:18; 3:11; 3:16-17, 22-24)

2. Wicked Mankind. The Lord who judged mankind when “He saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart is continually evil” (Gen. 6:5) is a single Person. (Gen. 6:6-8)

3. Noah. The Lord God who commanded Noah to build an ark and warned that He will destroy the corrupted flesh and earth and the Lord God who established His covenant with Noah is a single Person. (Gen. 6:11-18; 8:21; 9:8-17)

4. Abraham

a. The Lord God who called Abraham to “get out of thy (his) country and from thy (his) kindred, and from thy (his) father’s house, unto a land that I (Lord) will show thee.” (Gen. 12:1-3)

b. The Lord God who appeared unto Abraham and promised the land to Abraham. (Gen. 12:7; 13:15-17) and, therefore, the Lord to whom Abraham built an altar for and called unto His name (Gen. 12:8; 13:4, 18) and “gave tithes of all” and “lifted up his hands unto the Lord, the Most High God, the possessor of heaven and earth”. (Gen. 14:19-22)

c. The Lord God who appeared to Abram and revealed Himself “I am the Almighty God (El Shaddai) and covenanted with Abram that Abram will be the father of many nations. (Gen. 17:1-21)

5. Moses. The Lord God who singularly and personally appeared unto Moses who revealed Himself as the God of Abraham, of Isaac, of Jacob (Exo. 3:6, 16) and His name is I AM THAT I AM. (Exo. 3:14) In Exo. 6:2-3, He revealed Himself to Moses as God Almighty just as He revealed Himself unto Abraham unto Isaac unto Jacob.

6. Prophet Isaiah. In Isa. 6:1-3, the prophet Isaiah saw the glory of the Lord of hosts, the Lord King of Israel (Isa. 44:6). The prophet Isaiah spake about the Lord God as the Lord God who introduced Himself as a single Person (Isa. Chpt. 40-66). For example, the Lord God spoke unto Isaiah as “I, even I, am the Lord; bedside me there is no Savior” (Isa. 43:11) or “I am the first and the last; and beside me there is no God (Isa. 44:6)

7. King David. The Lord of David is a single Person, referred to as “He only is my rock and my salvation” (Psalm 62:2); or Ps. 100:1-2 says “Serve the Lord with gladness: come before His presence with singing, Know ye that the Lord is God: it is He that made us and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.”

8. The God who appeared unto Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and even unto Moses (Exo. 6:1-8) introduced Himself as God Almighty (El Shaddai). While all three Persons of the Godkind are all Almighty, they being co-equal with each other, since they are all of one essence in their Godhood, yet of the three Persons only one of them directly and personally appeared, revealed and introduced Himself as the Lord Almighty, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ (Rev. 1:8). The Lord Almighty in Rev. 1:8 is not the Father for the Father is invisible to the world (Col. 1:15; Jn. 1:18), dwells in an unapproachable light (1 Tim. 6:16), and cannot be directly accessed (Jn. 14:6), nor the Holy Spirit because the Holy Spirit indirectly manifests Himself symbolically. It is the Son Incarnate, the Lord Jesus, in Rev. 1:7-8, who:

a. was pierced (only God the Son took upon Himself the flesh of manhood, Jn. 1:14; Phil. 2:6-8);

b. can be seen by all eyes (for the Father is invisible to the world, Jn. 1:18; Col. 1:15; 1 Tim 6:16 while the Son is the one appearing to the world, Tit. 2:13-14; 1 Jn. 1:1-2, while the Holy Spirit manifests Himself only symbolically, e.g., as a dove, Matt. 3:16, or as cloven tongues of fire, Acts 2:3);

c. is to come again, Jn. 14:1-3.

9. The God who appeared unto Moses and introduced Himself as I AM is the Lord Jesus Christ who said, “before Abraham was, I am” (Jn. 8:58) and “if you do not believe that I am, you shall die in your sins” (Jn. 8:24). The God of Moses is the maker of the earth and the world and from everlasting to everlasting He is God (Ps. 90:1-2) who is the Lord who has become his salvation (Exo. 15:1-2). The same Lord is the spiritual Rock that followed Israel in the wilderness and that Rock was Christ (1 Cor 10:4). The Lord God who is the maker of the world (Jn. 1:3; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:10-12), the Lord God who is salvation (YAHWEH SHUA or JESUS) (Jn. 4:42; 1 Jn 4:14) and who is the Rock (Matt. 16:18; 1 Cor. 10:4; Ps. 62:2,6) is God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

10. The Lord of hosts whose glory the prophet Isaiah saw is the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 12:41-43).

11. David in the Spirit called the Christ as his Lord in the Book of Psalms of David. There is only one Christ or Messiah or Anointed in the Bible and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. (Matt. 22:41-45)

B. New Testament

1. The four Gospels, written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, teach that the Lord Jesus was worshipped and approached by the people for the healing of their sicknesses and diseases (Jn. 9:1-12 [the man born blind]; Lk. 8:40-56 [Jairus’ daughter]) or deliverance from oppression by the devil evil spirits (Matt. 9:32-34 [dumb man]; Mk. 7:24-30 [the Syrophoenician woman’s daughter]) or deliverance from sin (Matt. 9:1-8 [the paralytic]) is the Lord Jesus Christ and He was the Lord who directly answered all their needs.

2. The criminal crucified on the cross beside the cross of Jesus called on the Lord Jesus Christ and said, “Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into they kingdom.” (Lk. 23:42-43)

3. When Stephen was about to give up his spirit when the Jews stoned him for preaching the Lord Jesus Christ to them, he being full of the Holy Spirit called upon God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” (Acts 7:57-60)

4. Saul, i.e., Paul prior to his conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ, had the authority from the chief priests to bind and destroy all the saints that call on the name of Jesus. (Acts 9:13-14, 21)

5. So the Lord Jesus Christ in the New Testament is the one called upon, prayed to by the people of God, the church, the called out ones. (1 Cor. 1:2) The name called upon by the church of God, by those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints is the Lord Jesus Christ, both theirs and ours. This is so because there is none other name given under heaven by which we must be saved (and that is the name of the Lord Jesus Christ) (Acts 4:12) so that whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Acts 2:21). For the name Jesus is given by God the Father to God the Son which is a name above all names, that at the name of Jesus, every knee, of things in heaven or of things in earth or under the earth shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phil. 2:9-11)

C. Present Heavens

Rev. 5:11-12 (Phil. 2:9-11; Heb. 1:6). The Lord God given all the power and riches and wisdom and strength and glory and blessings by the saved in heaven together with ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of angels is the Lamb that was slain. That Passover Lamb (1 Cor. 5:7) that was slain is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God who taketh away the sin of the world (Jn. 1:29).

D. New Heavens and New Earth

Rev. 22:3-4. All those who will enter the new heavens and the new earth shall be the servants of the Lamb and they shall serve Him, they shall see His face (looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, Heb. 12:2) and His name shall be on their foreheads (meaning we are the Lord’s, Jn. 1:10-11; Heb. 1:1-3; Jn. 3:35; Matt. 11:27).

III. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, from the earth to the heavens, from everlasting to everlasting, the Lord God directly worshipped, called upon, prayed to and served (Matt. 4:10; Jn. 12:26; Col. 3:23-25) is God the Son who came in the flesh and His name is Jesus, the Christ. This is in accordance to the will of God the Father (Jn. 6:39-40) and the work of God the Holy Spirit (Jn. 16:7-15), that everyone’s all shall be committed in faith, hope and love to the Lord Jesus Christ who alone is the fulfillment of the eternal purpose of God (Ephe. 3:11) and all the promises of God in Him are yea and in Him Amen to the glory of God by us (2 Cor 1:20). Why don’t you commit your all to the Lord Jesus Christ and Jesus will be your all in all. (Col.3:11).
